A change of plans

In July 2020, I graduated from the University of Birmingham with a degree in English Literature. It almost happened without me realising – a few months before, I had just finished writing my 12,000-word dissertation. After many sleepless nights fuelled by instant coffee, my only plan post-graduation was to travel around before returning to England for my Master’s degree.

Then COVID-19 happened.

All of a sudden, it became less likely that I would be doing much of anything in the coming months. But I was determined to not let my summer in the UK go to waste. I wanted to do something with my time. Something productive!

Applying to AccountancyManager

Ultimately, I decided that the best thing for me was to look for more work experience. Having mainly worked in marketing roles for small arts organisations, I was ready for a new challenge. If I wanted to start my Master’s degree feeling refreshed and reinvigorated, I needed to test my current strengths and develop some new skills. So when I came across an internship advert from AccountancyManager on my university’s careers portal, I was immediately interested.

A few weeks after I applied, I received an email notifying me that I was invited to an Zoom interview with Jonathan, AM’s Marketing Manager. During the call, I let him know that even though I didn’t know much about the accounting industry, I was very eager to learn. I was so thrilled to find out that I had passed the interview.

Being a Marketing Intern

I had a pretty busy first day at AccountancyManager – and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. Only 2 hours after I started, I was already involved in a meeting with the team. The fact that I was included in important conversations from day one shows how open and collaborative the work environment is at AM. There was nothing I couldn’t ask about – and I asked a lot of questions during my internship!

When it comes to marketing, AccountancyManager is a fantastic place to get experience. This is because AM has an extremely active and ambitious marketing department. I was able to play a role in the development and delivery of content for such a wide variety of marketing channels: social media, websites, blogs, PPC, e-mail, direct mail, print advertising and more. As a result, I now have a more in-depth understanding of the field.

I think my proudest achievement as an intern is learning how to coordinate direct mail campaigns. From writing the copy to building mailing lists and posting the letters, I gained a lot from the process (using the envelope stuffing machine is trickier than one would expect…).

Some extra useful tidbits I learned during my time here:

  • ways to make graphics look crisper on Photoshop
  • the importance of hex codes
  • how to perform the VLOOKUP function in Excel without catastrophe

Final thoughts

My 2 months at AccountancyManager have been amazing. Everyone has been so friendly, approachable and amazing at what they do.

I’ve grown as a marketer in many ways, and I feel like I’m ready to tackle my Master’s degree with confidence. All in all, I’m leaving the company with a lot of marketing experience, some new skills and a bit more knowledge about the accounting industry. Thanks, AM.
